BNI meetings: the same agenda every week, new referrals every week

The same agenda across BNI

A BNI Chapter Meeting lasts around 90 minutes and follows a fixed agenda — the same across BNI worldwide. No improvisation: you know when you will present your business, when you will pass referrals and when you will meet the Visitors.

The twenty points fall into four phases. The agenda is identical in every BNI Chapter in the world — only the language changes, the order stays the same.

Open networking before a BNI Chapter Meeting: business cards changing hands, the registration table and conversations in the foyer.

Opening and networking

Before the formal agenda starts, there is time for informal conversations. Then those leading the meeting remind everyone why they are here — especially important for Visitors.

  1. Open networking.
  2. Welcome of Visitors; introduction of the Chapter Leadership Team, the Membership Committee, the Visitor Hosts and the Coordinators: Education, Events, Growth and Mentor.
  3. Purpose and overview of BNI®.
  4. Networking education.
  5. Announcement of BNI® Leaders.

Member and Visitor presentations

The heart of the first half: in 60 seconds, each Member reminds the Chapter what their business does. After the Members, the Visitors present — if they wish to.

  1. Passing the business card box.
  2. Welcome of new and renewing Members.
  3. Members’ Weekly Presentations — each Member introduces themselves and their business.
  4. Welcome of Visitors and their presentations.

Reports and the Featured Presentation

The Chapter accounts for its own work, and one of the Members gives a longer presentation about their business that day.

  1. Vice President’s report.
  2. Membership Committee report.
  3. The Secretary/Treasurer announces the speaker rotation.
  4. Featured Presentation — the speaker’s or speakers’ presentation.
A handshake over a red folder; the Chapter applauds at the table.

Referrals and closing

The culmination of the meeting: Members pass the referrals from the whole week, and the Chapter checks what came of the earlier ones.

  1. Referrals and testimonials.
  2. Referral Reality Check.
  3. Secretary/Treasurer’s report.
  4. The President thanks the Visitors.
  5. Announcements, reminders and BNI® special reports.
  6. Awards for Members who invited Visitors or passed referrals.
  7. Close of the meeting.

Two paths through the same meeting

The same agenda reads differently from a Visitor’s chair and from a Member’s seat. Choose your path.

You take part in the whole meeting and can talk about your business — about what matters to you — and speak with Members during networking. It is a chance to see from the inside what BNI is about, meet business owners from your area and grow your business.

There is no need to be nervous or to prepare in any special way. Bring business cards, or anything you can share your contact details with, and simply come along. You are among business owners who are friendly and want to help; the Chapter will guide you through the meeting, and the Director will look after you on the spot.

What can you expect during the meeting?

  1. At the start

You will be welcomed together with the other Visitors and hear what BNI is about and how the Chapter works.

  2. During the meeting

You will listen to the 60-second presentations of Members and Visitors, hear the reports and the referrals being passed, see how BNI works in practice and meet new people.

  3. Your moment

You will be able to introduce your business to the Chapter and say what you do. It takes well under a minute, so there is no need to prepare in any special way — it is a short introduction, not a speech.

  4. At the end

The President thanks the Visitors, and you can stay on for networking conversations. It is worth arriving a little earlier and staying a little longer — that is exactly when you get to know people.

As a Member, you come with the work done during the week — the meeting is the moment when it reaches its recipients. Referrals are generated throughout the week. Members prepare them between meetings — at the meeting they pass them on and account for them.

Having a fixed day and a fixed time, usually in the morning, is a deliberate decision: the system works because people can rely on one another. Trust, and the memory of what the others do, is built through repetition — after a dozen or so meetings, the Chapter knows your business well enough to recognise your client in its own conversations.

What do you do at the meeting as a Member?

  1. Your 60 seconds

Every week you remind the Chapter what you do and what kind of business you are looking for. A fixed structure: name, industry, description of the business, elaboration, name again at the end.

  2. Referrals from the week

During the week you listen out for needs that a business of someone in the Chapter could meet. You let both sides know in advance and bring them into a conversation — and at the meeting you pass the referral.

  3. Referral check

The Chapter goes back to earlier referrals and checks whether they turned into a conversation and into business. That is the difference between BNI and casual networking.

  4. Attendance or a Substitute

Attendance is one of a Member’s basic commitments. If you cannot come in a given week, you send a Substitute who will pass on your referrals and your presentation.

An identical agenda across BNI has a practical purpose: every business receives the same time and the same visibility each week, and a Visitor — whichever city they are in — knows what to expect. Chapters in Poland meet from Tuesday to Friday; each of them sets its own day, time and venue.
